PERFORMANCE TEST:

It is imperative to accurately measure the transom mount height for an Epropulsion outboard. Having the wrong measurement for the shaft length can drastically affect the performance of the outboard. If the measurement taken is too short for the transom mount, the propeller will not sit deep enough in the water. When the propeller does not sit deep enough in the water it will cavitate and decrease efficiency. If the measurement taken is too long for the transom mount, the propeller will sit too deep into the water. When a propeller sits too low behind a boat, it will have increased water resistance and reduced speeds.

How to Find Your Shaft Length

If you are looking for an ePropulsion electric outboard for your boat, choosing the correct shaft length is important.

Please note that ePropulsion has a different shaft length measurement from gas-powered outboards. For electric outboards, the shaft length is measured from the top of the clamp bracket to the center of the propeller. For gas outboards, it’s measured from the top of the clamp bracket to the anti-ventilation plate.

As you can see, our XS is close to S from Mercury. Our S is close to L from Mercury. Our L is longer than L from Mercury. See below.

To find the suitable shaft length, the principle is to make sure the top of the propeller is matched to the lowest point of the transom. Hard to put it into practice? Well, in order to get the right shaft length, first, measure the transom height, the length from the top of the boat transom to the bottom of the boat.

After that, you could choose the recommended shaft length based according to the transom height.

For most small dinghies and aluminum boats under 15ft or 4.5m, extra short shaft and short will work, depending on the transom height, some over 40 cm / 15.7 inches, some not.

For boats with the transom height higher than 50 cm / 19.7 inches, a long shaft version is more suitable. For daysailers, sports boats and other sailing boats it’s best to measure the distance from the water line to the top of your outboard mount.

Very Satisfied.

After receiving the motor and battery, I realized there was something missing. It was the attachment parts for the outboard steering mechanism. Tiny Boat shipped the parts out immediately and it was a fairly easy install. My 16' pontoon boat cruises now and the battery has a very long life as we can ride around our little lake multiple times without worry. Highly recommend TBNation AND EPropulsion. I just wish I could buy a cover for the motor shaft so I can leave it hooked up permanently without worry of sun damage hear in AZ.

Great outboard and super support!

We bought this motor to replace a 4 hp 4-stroke outboard for our sailboat dingy. The main reason being that my wife could not mount or start the four stroke engine without me being present. The Spirit outboard was a game changer. It's lightweight, easy to mount, and there's no question about getting it started. You merely push a button, twist the throttle, and away you go.
We had a throttle circuit board failure with the motor after a little over a year of ownership. A quick email to the dealer, and they arranged for a new board to be sent to us. Easy installation, and we were back up running, no questions asked, you can't ask for any better!

So far so awesome!

Bought this for a MacGregor 26x sailboat to replace a 4-stroke outboard that was giving no end of trouble. Every sail ended with stress uncertain if the motor would cooperate. Took a major leap to the ePropulsion, coming in with worry about how it would get us back in wind and if it had enough power to steer effectively. It’s been on the boat two weeks and out sailing 3x. Initial impressions are very happy, the install was way easy and there was zero BS about gas, oil, and all that comes with a traditional motor. The instructions were fairly clear and the setup is very simple. Absolutely love how easy the throttle is to engage and how quiet the motor is, very stealth! Maneuvered in and out the slip and marina with ease. Used about 10% battery for our average motoring needs to get in, out, sails up and down. Third day out sailed fast enough to get some regen, about 10v in at 3 knots. Also love that there’s no starting, if you need a quick adjustment for learning sailing or want to add a little push in a light breeze it came right into action. Did some testing the other day going into 12-15 knots wind (sails down) and were able to maintain 3 knots speed at 700w output with ease. That increased confidence for sure. It’s no 12hp, no doubt, but we’re lake sailing and choosing conditions carefully. I would want something more powerful for open ocean. Going to get the solar panel connector to recharge from there as well. As this rate could comfortably do 3 sails between charges if feeling lazy, battery easy to take home and charge back t we prefer everything no to stay on the boat so we can go for an impromptu outing without having to go by the house first. Great buy for our needs.
