PERFORMANCE TEST:

It is imperative to accurately measure the transom mount height for an Epropulsion outboard. Having the wrong measurement for the shaft length can drastically affect the performance of the outboard. If the measurement taken is too short for the transom mount, the propeller will not sit deep enough in the water. When the propeller does not sit deep enough in the water it will cavitate and decrease efficiency. If the measurement taken is too long for the transom mount, the propeller will sit too deep into the water. When a propeller sits too low behind a boat, it will have increased water resistance and reduced speeds.

How to Find Your Shaft Length

If you are looking for an ePropulsion electric outboard for your boat, choosing the correct shaft length is important.

Please note that ePropulsion has a different shaft length measurement from gas-powered outboards. For electric outboards, the shaft length is measured from the top of the clamp bracket to the center of the propeller. For gas outboards, it’s measured from the top of the clamp bracket to the anti-ventilation plate.

As you can see, our XS is close to S from Mercury. Our S is close to L from Mercury. Our L is longer than L from Mercury. See below.

To find the suitable shaft length, the principle is to make sure the top of the propeller is matched to the lowest point of the transom. Hard to put it into practice? Well, in order to get the right shaft length, first, measure the transom height, the length from the top of the boat transom to the bottom of the boat.

After that, you could choose the recommended shaft length based according to the transom height.

For most small dinghies and aluminum boats under 15ft or 4.5m, extra short shaft and short will work, depending on the transom height, some over 40 cm / 15.7 inches, some not.

For boats with the transom height higher than 50 cm / 19.7 inches, a long shaft version is more suitable. For daysailers, sports boats and other sailing boats it’s best to measure the distance from the water line to the top of your outboard mount.

Very strong motor

Installed the 1.0 on my newly reworked 14’ aluminum Mirrocraft. Three of us big guys then hit the water to give the new boat and motor a try. Encountered windy conditions and 2-3 foot waves. The little motor plowed its way through and got us back to shore safely. Upon arrival we were greeted by Utah Division of Wildlife officials. They raved about the rebuilt boat and especially the “green” power! I love it and the support I have received from the TBN team!

The motor works great on my pontoon boat on

The motor works great on my pontoon boat on the private Lake we live on. It goes up to four miles an hour which is great for our lake. We put lead batteries on it for them and we can be out on the lake up to 4 hours at a time before we have to recharge and that's not the batteries even going all the way dead. We really enjoy being out on the lake now this has been the best investment we've made for our pontoon boat this year thank you Tiny boat Nation for helping us out to get the right one for us.
P.S. shout out to Ryan he was so much great help from me called several times he answered all my questions and made sure I had everything I needed so when the motor came I had everything to hook it up and take off. Thank you Ryan we appreciate you.

Plenty of power for a Hobie Getaway

We grabbed this unit to give us an option to motor out for sails on a small catamaran. Using a Cheata motor mount on our Hobie Getaway, we have found the Spirit EVO to be plenty of power. The wireless controller is especially useful for sailing applications. While we haven’t had this unit long the first impressions are very strong. If it holds up, I’m impressed!

Impressive

I like everything about this motor and controls however, It would be nice if you created a cd explaining all the details vs going on YouTube.

Quiet and powerful

I purchased this to replace a 5hp outboard on my 21 foot sailboat. It is so much nicer to have the reliability and instant power of an electric motor without having to pull start a gas outboard. It makes sailing much more enjoyable. The regeneration works pretty well as we gained about 4% battery while sailing at about 4-6 knots for 2 hours.

Happy with Motor

The Epropulsion Spirit 1.0 Evo arrived on time without any issues. Has gotten my Montgomery 17 sailboat in and out of the harbor a couple of times now without using much battery, once in some pretty heavy chop. Feeling confident enough to buy another battery and take her on some longer adventures! Thanks Tiny Boat Nation!

Very Satisfied.

After receiving the motor and battery, I realized there was something missing. It was the attachment parts for the outboard steering mechanism. Tiny Boat shipped the parts out immediately and it was a fairly easy install. My 16' pontoon boat cruises now and the battery has a very long life as we can ride around our little lake multiple times without worry. Highly recommend TBNation AND EPropulsion. I just wish I could buy a cover for the motor shaft so I can leave it hooked up permanently without worry of sun damage hear in AZ.

Great outboard and super support!

We bought this motor to replace a 4 hp 4-stroke outboard for our sailboat dingy. The main reason being that my wife could not mount or start the four stroke engine without me being present. The Spirit outboard was a game changer. It's lightweight, easy to mount, and there's no question about getting it started. You merely push a button, twist the throttle, and away you go.
We had a throttle circuit board failure with the motor after a little over a year of ownership. A quick email to the dealer, and they arranged for a new board to be sent to us. Easy installation, and we were back up running, no questions asked, you can't ask for any better!

So far so awesome!

Bought this for a MacGregor 26x sailboat to replace a 4-stroke outboard that was giving no end of trouble. Every sail ended with stress uncertain if the motor would cooperate. Took a major leap to the ePropulsion, coming in with worry about how it would get us back in wind and if it had enough power to steer effectively. It’s been on the boat two weeks and out sailing 3x. Initial impressions are very happy, the install was way easy and there was zero BS about gas, oil, and all that comes with a traditional motor. The instructions were fairly clear and the setup is very simple. Absolutely love how easy the throttle is to engage and how quiet the motor is, very stealth! Maneuvered in and out the slip and marina with ease. Used about 10% battery for our average motoring needs to get in, out, sails up and down. Third day out sailed fast enough to get some regen, about 10v in at 3 knots. Also love that there’s no starting, if you need a quick adjustment for learning sailing or want to add a little push in a light breeze it came right into action. Did some testing the other day going into 12-15 knots wind (sails down) and were able to maintain 3 knots speed at 700w output with ease. That increased confidence for sure. It’s no 12hp, no doubt, but we’re lake sailing and choosing conditions carefully. I would want something more powerful for open ocean. Going to get the solar panel connector to recharge from there as well. As this rate could comfortably do 3 sails between charges if feeling lazy, battery easy to take home and charge back t we prefer everything no to stay on the boat so we can go for an impromptu outing without having to go by the house first. Great buy for our needs.

Perfect for our purpose

A little bit about our needs. We have a 58 foot express cruiser and currently do most of our boating on Fort Loudon Lake and the TN river. Eventually we will be migrating south to the Gulf Coast and eventually the Carribean. We are using our dinghy, a Zodiac Cadet 310 (10 foot), to run relatively short distances. I did a lot of research comparing it to gas as well as other comparable electric motors.
I have several reasons for going electric. Our engines are diesel and I did not want the hassle and safety hazard of carrying gasoline. I wanted something low maintenance and quite without the hassles of a pull start. I recently installed a Bluetti Inverter/solar system on my boat and the electric motor only ability to charge from solar or self generate only made sense.
I like the fact that the EProplusion battery will float if dropped. Separated from the motor/shat the weight of the unit is manageable. Power utilization seems to be optimized at about half throttle and honestly the speed differential doesn't seem to be all that dramatic from WOT. You should not expect a fast ride, but a leisurely cruise with power to spare and no noise is pleasant experience.
I think the Mercury electric has a little slicker appearance, although I received a lot of compliments about the EPropulsion at a recent raft up.
The only negative that I have noted so far is that the battery only has a red to blue charging light. It would be nice to have a readout of the percent of charge on the battery itself without having to attach it to the engine.
As of now, I am pleased with our purchase!

EPropulsion Spirit 1.0 EVO on Precision 21 sailboat

I recently purchased an Epropulsion Spirit 1.0 EVO for my Precision 21 sailboat. I also added the wireless remote.
What a wonderful change from the 4 stroke outboard I’d been using. Whisper quiet, no fumes, no gasoline, much lighter, and all it does is work every time I need it to.
My P-21 is a stub keel and weighs ~2300 lbs. With zero wind and the motor at 60 watts the boat moves at 1.2 knots. According to the motor readout it can do this for 9+ hours! With zero wind and the throttle wide open the boat moves at 3.5 knots. Your speeds may vary.
We’re also able to cogenerate ( leaving the motor down while sailing) It does slow the boat down by ~ 0.5 knots and we don’t tack quite as quickly.
The wireless remote allows me to keep my eyes forward while docking and precisely control the motor speed and direction.
I also added a tag line to the motor release lever so I can lower the motor back in the water without having to reach through my stern railing.
We bring the battery home to recharge when we hit 40 volts. I’ve also purchased the solar charger but haven’t gotten that running yet.
Overall a great motor. Thanks!

Pleasantly surprised

WE had 7people on my 3.4 Highland dingy and the spirit did great getting us from the boat to shore for lunch. Very quiet, and plenty of pep to get us there. We removed the battery and tiller arm once we arrived. just for safe keeping. Comfort in knowing it was not as desirable to stolen. Only thing I would change is the pin to hold the tiller arm to the unit. If you dropped it, then it would be difficult to replace. Nice if the pin had a stopper so it would not come out completely. Other wise best decision we made to go electric for the out board.
