Why the ePropulsion Spirit 2 is the New Gold Standard

Unlike traditional gas motors that require pull-starts, winterizing, and heavy fuel tanks, the Spirit 2 offers a "Plug-and-Play" experience.

  • 5HP Power + 6HP Boost Mode: Mostelectric outboard boat motors in this class struggle to plane small hulls. The Spirit 2 solves this with a 2kW nominal output and a 3kW Boost Mode. This extra kick of thrust is the difference between a slow troll and a plane-speed cruise on lightweight aluminum and inflatable boats.

  • Cable-Free Design:The new 1539Wh Spirit Battery Ultra features a "Slide-On" design that connects directly to the motor head. No external power cables to trip over, snag, or corrode.

  • Integrated Hydrogeneration:Perfect for sailors. When the boat is under sail (or being towed) at speeds between 3 and 16 knots, the motor acts as a turbine, sending power back into the battery.

Real-World Performance & Range

Based on a typical 12' aluminum boat with one person.

Throttle Level Power Speed (MPH) Run Time Range (Miles)
Slow Troll 100W 2.5 mph 15+ Hours 37+ Miles
Cruising 500W 4.2 mph 3 Hours 12.6 Miles
Full Power 2000W 6.0 mph 45-54 Min 5 Miles
Boost Mode 3000W 8.5 mph* 30 Min N/A

*Speeds vary based on hull weight and water conditions.

Shaft Length Recommendation Guide

Choosing the correct shaft length is critical for performance. Measure your transom height (from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull) and use the guide below:

Shaft Length Transom Height
Extra Short* 30–40 cm / 11.8–15.7 inches
Short 40–50 cm / 15.7–19.7 inches
Long Higher than 50 cm / 19.7 inches

*Extra Short is not available for the Remote version.

Spirit 2 vs Spirit 1.0 Plus: What’s Actually Different?

If you’re researching the ePropulsion Spirit lineup, one of the most common questions is whether the Spirit 2 is really a big upgrade over the Spirit 1.0 Plus.

Both motors target the same category: portable electric outboards for small boats, tenders, inflatables, and Jon boats. However, the Spirit 2 introduces several meaningful improvements that make it a stronger choice for many tiny-boat setups.

Let’s break down the differences.

Spirit 2 vs Spirit 1.0 Plus: Key Differences

Spirit 2
Spirit 2
Spirit 1.0 Plus
Spirit 1.0 Plus
Power Output 2kW continuous (≈5HP equivalent) 1kW continuous (≈3HP equivalent)
Boost Mode 3kW temporary boost for extra thrust Not available
Performance Impact Can push heavier boats and even plane lightweight 10–12 ft aluminum boats Best suited for dinghies, tenders, and small inflatables
Battery Capacity 1539Wh Spirit Battery Ultra 1276Wh battery
Battery Design Cable-free slide-on battery that mounts directly on the motor External battery connection with cable
Installation Cleaner setup with fewer wires on the boat Requires battery cable routing
Hydrogeneration Yes — generates power when sailing or being towed Limited / not optimized
Efficiency & Range Improved efficiency and range monitoring Good range but fewer efficiency features
Display & Controls Full-color digital tiller display with battery %, range, and power data Basic display with limited data
Extra Features USB-C charging port for electronics No integrated charging port
Noise Level Under ~60 dB at full throttle Quiet but slightly less refined
Best For Jon boats, micro-skiffs, inflatables, small fishing boats Dinghies, sailboat tenders, lightweight inflatables

Which One Should You Choose?

Both motors are excellent electric propulsion systems, but they serve slightly different boaters.

Choose the Spirit 1.0 Plus if you:

  • Need a lightweight tender motor
  • Run a small dinghy
  • Mostly cruise at low speeds
  • Want the most affordable option

Choose the Spirit 2 if you:

  • Run a tiny fishing boat
  • Want more thrust and acceleration
  • Need power for wind/current
  • Prefer cleaner cable-free installation
  • Want the latest technology

For most Tiny Boat Nation builds, the Spirit 2 is the more versatile motor, especially for aluminum boats and micro-skiffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ePropulsion Spirit 2 powerful enough for a Jon boat?

  • Yes! The Spirit 2 is specifically designed for "Tiny Boat" enthusiasts. While a standardelectric outboard motor might struggle with wind or current, the Spirit 2’s 3000W Boost Mode provides the torque necessary to navigate tough conditions and plane lightweight 10-12' hulls.

Can I use the Spirit 2 in saltwater?

  • Absolutely. EveryePropulsion motor is designed for the marine environment. The Spirit 2 features high-quality anodized aluminum and stainless steel components to prevent corrosion. We recommend a fresh-water rinse after each use.

How does it compare to a gas outboard?

  • The Spirit 2 replaces a 5HP gas motor. You lose the smell of exhaust, the noise, and the maintenance (no oil changes or spark plugs), while gaining instant torque and a much lighter total package.

Honest people + Best Customer Service

Great motor. Loving it. But EVEN BETTER was TBN's service. they were honest about what was actually in stock, took my order and followed up in minutes, then made sure my order went out within 24hrs so I could bring it on a family vacation. Skip the big corporate marine sites and start your search at tbnation.net. Highly recommend them.

Good Purchase Experience with TBN

Pre-ordered this motor and the TBN folks got it to me as soon as it became available. Great purchase experience - Ryan spent some time on the phone helping me understand the new product and quelling my concerns about being among the first to purchase. Have yet to use it in the water but the battery charged well, a test mounting on the dinghy worked fine, and the motor came to life as expected. User interface was bright and readable. Tiller engagement of F-N-R was smooth and trouble free. Looking forward to the first in-water trial.

Fantastic e- motor

Pre ordered the Sprit 2 and TBN delivered earlier than expected. Motor arrived packaged very well with everything in excellent condition. I describe the motor as the best piece of modern technology I have ever seen. I am bench testing the motor now and operation is flawless. Love the design, transom mount is excellent and the slip in battery makes everything very easy. Won’t get it on the dingy until Aug but love the design.

Is the shaft adjustable in any way? Is it possible to operate the motor using a portable power station? like a Jackery? Is there a locations map of outlets and marinas who will stock parts like props, etc?

Tiny Boat Nation

Hello TSD,

The shaft is not adjustable, it comes in fixed lengths.

It can be recharged from a power station but you can not operate it from a power station.

I don't have a map of stocking locations or outlets.

Thank you.

R
Remote or Tiller?

I can't tell from the listing if this is a remote unit, or a tiller unit, or if they are interchangable. Looking to pre-order a remote unit.

How long will the battery last at low speed

Tiny Boat Nation

Hello JJ,

The capacity of the people who will be on the boat and the condition of the water are the primary factors that determine on how battery last at low speed.

For more information, please refer to our product information: https://tbnation.net/products/epropulsion-spirit-2-electric-outboard. Thank you.

Remote or Tiller?

Do you know what "early spring" is looking like? I'm looking to get a new boat on the water in the next month, and would prefer this motor to the Spirit 1.0.

Tiny Boat Nation

The New EPropulsion Spirit 2 is slated for a MAY arrival as of now. A couple key points between the difference of the Spirit 2 versus the Spirit 1.0 Plus, is that if you have a lightweight craft and speed is a priority of getting 9-12mph...then the Spirit 2 is right for you! If you have a larger boat and are just looking for pushing power up to 5-6mph then the Spirit 1.0 is the better option. On a larger vessel the Spirit 1.0 is the more economical performance versus cost motor of the two. The Spirit 2 really shines on lightweight craft where the extra speed is valued. On larger craft the Spirit 2 pushes very well but has minimal speed gain of 1-2 mph versus 5-6 mph gain on a small or light vessel.

Is there a 12v dc charger available

Tiny Boat Nation

Hello Matt,

We still don’t have an available 12V DC charger for the EPropulsion Spirit 2 (5HP) electric outboard motor. However, we are hoping to have it available later in 2026. Thank you.
