    OWNERS MANUAL:

    PERFORMANCE TEST:

It is imperative to accurately measure the transom mount height for an Epropulsion outboard. Having the wrong measurement for the shaft length can drastically affect the performance of the outboard. If the measurement taken is too short for the transom mount, the propeller will not sit deep enough in the water. When the propeller does not sit deep enough in the water it will cavitate and decrease efficiency. If the measurement taken is too long for the transom mount, the propeller will sit too deep into the water. When a propeller sits too low behind a boat, it will have increased water resistance and reduced speeds.

How to Find Your Shaft Length

If you are looking for an ePropulsion electric outboard for your boat, choosing the correct shaft length is important.

*NOTE* TAKACAT, Aircat, Bris and other Fully Inflatable Catamarans require the SHORT Shaft - due to shallow transom depth in the water.

Please note that ePropulsion has a different shaft length measurement from gas-powered outboards. For electric outboards, the shaft length is measured from the top of the clamp bracket to the center of the propeller. For gas outboards, it’s measured from the top of the clamp bracket to the anti-ventilation plate.

As you can see, our XS is close to S from Mercury. Our S is close to L from Mercury. Our L is longer than L from Mercury. See below.

To find the suitable shaft length, the principle is to make sure the top of the propeller is matched to the lowest point of the transom. In order to get the right shaft length, first, measure the transom height, the length from the top of the boat transom to the bottom of the boat.

After that, you could choose the recommended shaft length based according to the transom height.

For most small dinghies and aluminum boats under 15ft, extra short shaft and short will work, depending on the transom height, some over 15.7 inches, some not.

For boats with the transom height higher than 50 cm / 19.7 inches, a long shaft version is more suitable. For daysailers, sports boats and other sailing boats it’s best to measure the distance from the water line to the top of your outboard mount.

    Quiet, lightweight, and easy!

I’m very happy with the Spirit 1.0 Plus! It is so much easier to handle than my 70+lb 2-stroke, it’s nearly silent, has lots of range and best of all…it’s reliable.

Works well - But there are problems

I have a Hotwoods Aluma Sport 615 Pontoon Boat. The Motor Mount is rated for up to 15 HP, but the top of the mount is only about 3 inches above the floor. The tiller on the EPropulsion Spirit is only an inch above the mounting point, which means that the tiller would mount only about 4 inches above the floor. This means I have to contort myself to be able to steer - not very comfortable. I talked to a TBNation person and he suggested that I need to get a Jackplate. I was told that a Jackplate was about $110 - but when I actually researched it, turns out that a single position jack plate was $216! Additionally, my lake is fairly shallow, and I wanted to be able to adjust the motor position easily. A manually adjustable Jackplate is $600!. So, I ordered the manually adjustable Jackplate and had to wait another week. After I installed the Jackplate, I discovered that the brackets on the movable plate are too wide to allow the motor to attach to the movable plate. I had to some modifications, bolt on a 2x6 and now everything works well.
As far as performance: The Propulsion Spirit works really well. I had been using a 55 ftlb trolling motor and was barely moving. The Propulsion moves me around the Lake really well. The unit is much lighter than my old motor and battery. I really like the readout on the tiller. I can see how a small adjustment in speed makes a huge difference in how long the battery will last. The motor is more than 3 times the power of my old unit so I can go faster if I wish.
Aside from the difficulty to install the EPropulsion Spirit, I am pleased with the unit. When I spoke to the TBNation person, I had thought I would need a standard length, but he suggested I would need a Long Shaft - I am so glad that he strongly made this suggestion. If you are not sure how long a shaft to get, get the Long shaft - you have a lot more flexibility.
I really like the 17 lb battery and the ease of charging the unit. The motor and body weigh about the same as my old trolling motor - so there is not much difference there. The power of the EPropulsion Spirit and the ease of hauling the unit back to the house to charge make changing to this unit worth while - just be aware that you may have to purchase a significant amount of gear to make it work and do a lot of customization, too.

    Great little engine

Very happy with this engine. Easy to use, no maintenance, which is good for me as an occasional user. My fuel engines always got clogged up, glad that problem has disappeared. This little engine is just what I need for my Porta Bote.
